Introduction of our two guests:

Our two guests who came this week were Marie Himes, director of the Institute for New Pedagogy at North Carolina State University, and Professor Sarah Bausell. Marie has visited SNA many times and has a good understanding of our institution. She is responsible for coordinating the cooperation between our two institutions and the related activities throughout the whole process. Marie is also responsible for training SNA teachers every year. Due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions, Marie couldn’t visit our school during those three years, but she still maintained very close contact with our school through online meetings. With the removal of all travel restrictions, Marie was finally able to return to SNA this year. This week, we are also honored to have Professor Sarah visit our campus. This was Sarah’s first visit to SNA as well as China. During the week, she met with several teachers and students offering them valuable suggestion reading teaching and learning.

  Project-Base Inquiry(PBI):

Project-Base Inquiry (PBI) :

On Monday afternoon, the PBI meeting was held in the school theatre. The PBI program is a special academic program co-directed by the Suzhou North American International High School and the Institute of New Pedagogy at the North Carolina State University in the United States. It was first established in 2015 to promote the exchange and discussion of topics between Chinese and American students. PBI encourages students to apply their knowledge to solve practical social problems. This program is organized annually around a social theme. For example, last year, the topic was about water purification and rational use of water resources. PBI has built a platform for students to challenge themselves, make new breakthrough and realize their dreams. Under the guidance of the instructor, students can independently explore and actively innovate in their favorite subject fields by completing data analysis, testing experiments, learning and practicing through teamwork, and sharing their research results with other people.

At the beginning of the meeting, Marie enthusiastically introduced the previous PBI projects to all the students and teachers at SNA. "The PBI program has been going on for 10 years," Marie said. After introducing PBI, last year's PBI instructors—Channel, Edelyn, Krissy— all gave their personal views of this program, reiterating the importance of the activity, that PBI exposes students to real social issues and teach them how to use knowledge and practice to find solutions of a particular social problem. They hoped that this rare experience will help students go further in their path of academic exploration.

Student representatives of the groups that participated in last year’s PBI project also shared their insights and thoughts: David, from Group Raft, presented the filter that was designed by his group for sieving gravel and sand. The efficient cooperation and communication among team members greatly improved their work efficiency, according to David. He felt that the PBI experience gave his team members a deeper understanding of knowledge related with water and helped them to look at the development of the problem from a broader, global perspective.

Next, Tiffany from the Fishing Impact Team presented her team's initial views on the social issues related to clean water: in regions that are remote and poor, clean water is very scarce. So, the team decided to create a filter made of simple materials that would help everyone have access to clean water at a low cost. In their plan, they hope to call on more people in the community to join their Filter Project. “We are committed to making the project more ‘viable’,” Tiffany added, “so that every action we take is meaningful.”

Alonzo, a team representative from Royal Gramma, presented their new filter design. Because of industrial pollution and other factors, obtaining clean water has always been a problem in need of a solution. After a survey of the surrounding river, the team further improved their research results through a series of sophisticated processes such as sample collection, device design, and result verification. Alonzo believes that this PBI experience is a great opportunity to develop personal research skills and enhance the participants' social responsibility where each individual can have a great impact on the environment and make constructive changes possible.

Finally, Helen, a group member of 2HydrolOxy, introduced their research process: group members in this team are concerned about agricultural water use, so they have designed Chinese agricultural water filters to help with this problem. During the study process, they overcame many difficulties such as the experimental errors. Helen felt that the most impressive moment was when all the team members discussed and presented their achievements as a group on stage. She suggested that students who participate in PBI in the future should learn how to cooperate, efficiently make overall arrangements, ask questions actively in the process of exploration, and put their ideas into practice.

After the teams finished their speeches, Marie asked all the students and teachers to write down their commitment to protecting and saving water resources on a piece of red paper. Then, we folded the paper into the shape of a hummingbird and hung it on a tree in SNA. A hummingbirds is small, but it carries the commitment and expectations of SNA students. Believing that "small actions can make a big impact", students in SNA will keep contributing on water conservation projects, hoping to make our community better.

Interview

About Marie: Question 1: How was your trip so far? Marie: This trip has been amazing! This is my ninth time to SNA, but it has been four years since I’ve been here, and it’s really exciting to see the continuity and the new things that have been embraced at SNA.

Question 2: Do you have new discoveries this time? Marie: So, I think, one of the most exciting things since we were here last time was being able to see how the different facilities on campus have changed, like the new AI lab, the super-conductor lab, the economics lab…… because those spaces should be really conducive for students-centered learning.

Question 3: How do you feel about the newly established AI lab? Marie: I think that Artificial Intelligence is increasingly important in our daily lives, and helping young people understand the significance, like how to utilize AI in constructive ways, thinking about some of the ethical dilemmas around AI……all of those things need to be a part of schooling.

Question 4: How did you feel about the PBI meeting on Monday? Marie: The PBI presentation was very exciting! PBI Global is something that SNA and the Friday Institute have done together for almost ten years. Seeing how the students brought it to life last year with the projects that they pursued and sharing their findings makes it really rewarding from my perspective to have been able to support their teachers along the way to bring that project to finish.

Question 5: In the PBI meeting, we all folded the hummingbirds together. Was that your idea? Marie: Yes! I mean I can’t claim the project……but the global bouquet of humming birds is something that I found in my work with global education. It’s a broad campaign from the United Nations where they invite educators and students to connect and take action regarding global water supplies and sanitation. By thinking of those commitments and creating that beautiful display of hummingbirds, we are reminded that the small actions we take every day help us reach our final goal.

Question 6: How do you feel about the bilingual cultural exchange program? Marie: I think this year, it is really important to start the cultural exchange program small. It’s small in terms of the interaction with the students, but there are large number of students who are participating. I hope in the future, that the connections around what the students are talking about can be more relevant to building their global competence, and it would be ideal if in the future, the students would be able to talk to one to another synchronously by video conferencing.

Question 7: Do you have anything new you want to share with SNA students? Marie: I think the most important feeling that I’m leaving this trip has been something that has stayed with me throughout planning and working with long-standing friends in SNA. You know, we see each other a lot online, but being face to face again is such an immense feeling of gratitude! I hope that students here in the SNA can really reflect on the opportunities that they have at the school and things like the PBI global and the cross-cultural exchanges, and see how taking advantage participating in those initiatives can really enhance their understanding of themselves, their own community and culture, and being able to share those very important things with the rest of the world.

About Sarah Question 1. How do you feel about China: Sarah: This is the first time I visit SNA and this is my first time in China as well! I love it! It’s so beautiful, the gracious host……and I think the food is amazing, the culture is amazing…… and I’m learning so much seeing the whole school and meeting with teachers and students.

Question 2: What is your favorite Chinese food? Sarah: Oh, I think the noodles are good…and the soups. They are so delicious!

Question 3: How do you feel about the PBI project? Sarah: I think that the PBI Global work here in SNA is very important, we are so proud of the students and teachers who carefully think about the STGs and how they relate. In a global context, the students determine the work and we are very proud of them.

Question 4: Since this is the first time that SNA starts the dual language cultural exchange program, does it impress you? Sarah: Yes! It’s so wonderful to see……especially for the US students who are learning Mandarin, they don’t have much opportunity to practice outside the class. So, this is exciting for them!

Question 5: Anything else you want to say about SNA or to SNA students? Sarah: Yes! I am so impressed! I love watching your classes and the hard work, and also the clubs. Yesterday, we got to visit yesterday the Badminton, Ping-pong, Dance clubs…… It is so amazing to see all the hard work of the students, and the joyful band clubs! That looks so good!
