In addition, we also interviewed Jacky, who won the Qiu Chengtong Science Award. He shared some of his experience in participating in the competition with us. Let's take a look:

Q1: During the preparation process, did you encounter particularly challenging moments that made you feel like giving up? How did you overcome these difficulties and persevere?

A: The most challenging moment was that this competition was a brand new one for our entire group, because no other students in our school had participated in this competition as a team before, so for us, this was an unprepared competition without much information, so we needed to explore by ourselves. To find the competition tips or some useful information.

As for how we overcame these difficulties, our approach was to search for some of the competition processes and experiences of other people who had participated in this competition online, and at the same time improve our understanding of the projects we were doing, so as to prepare for the questions that the examiners might ask during the defense.

Q2: Can you share your preparation strategies? For example, time management, selection of learning resources, etc. In the process of preparing for this competition, what major obstacles or problems did you encounter, and how did you solve them?

A: It took me about a month to prepare for the competition. So when I was preparing for the competition, I took leave for all my AP classes, including other classes, but I didn't say I didn't attend them at all. I communicated with the teachers, and they gave me daily learning tasks, and some teachers also recorded some videos for me to use in class, so that I could study these subjects by myself outside the laboratory time to make up for the gap between me and my classmates.

The main obstacle encountered in this competition is the first one. This is a very new competition for our school and our entire team. We have no experience in participating in the competition before, so for many of us, we have to explore bravely on our own.

Then our solution is just like what I said before, which is to improve our understanding of the projects we are doing, memorize the questions we may answer during the defense, and prepare many mock defenses to relieve our nervousness.

Q3: Which member or moment of the team do you think has a key positive impact on the performance of the entire team? Why?

A: I think every member of our team has played a vital role in our competition. I think the moment that made me feel the happiest was when I saw that every member of the team worked until late for this project. The moment that impressed me the most was when I and Teacher Dong from the laboratory discussed the details of the PPT presentation in the laboratory the day before the competition and the day before the defense. We prepared for this competition wholeheartedly. Many chemistry teachers in the school also provided their understanding and suggestions for the projects we did for this competition. Everyone who contributed to this competition is amazing!

Q4: Among the knowledge or skills learned in this competition, which do you think are most helpful for your future studies and career?

A: Because this is a competition where we do a project by ourselves and compare our own projects with those done by others, we did not learn a lot of new knowledge in this competition, but on the contrary, through this competition experience, I have summarized a lot of useful experience.

For example, when the pressure is very high and there are many tasks, how should we arrange our time? The solution I gave is that we should first do those problems that are easier to solve, and then save our energy for those more difficult problems. Another thing is the ability to cope with stress under great pressure, because we will have a face-to-face defense with the referee later, so we have to use our own knowledge to answer any questions they may give us. This is very demanding for us, and of course the pressure is also very high. So we use many methods, such as mock defense, to relieve our high pressure and improve our ability to withstand pressure.

Q5: Is there a specific project or challenge during the competition that makes you feel particularly accomplished or impressive? Please share that experience.

A: I think the most fulfilling thing about this project is that we really did something that is definitely helpful to society. Our project uses a new method of biological preparation to prepare nanosilver particles, because many of the previous preparation methods of nanosilver contain some harmful substances. So in this preparation process, we tried to use a harmless method to prepare nanosilver, because nanosilver itself is widely used in fish and shrimp aquaculture. Then we are worried that this harmful nanosilver will enter the river and affect the small fish and shrimp in our river, so we want to see if our new nanosilver particles, that is, the nanosilver prepared by our green preparation method, will affect the small fish and shrimp in the river, so we caught some small fish and shrimp from the river for experiments and found that our nanosilver did not have any effect on them.

Q6: How do you view the role of failure in scientific exploration and competition? If you have encountered failure in this or previous competitions, how do you learn from it and move forward?

A: It’s still the classic saying, I think failure will always exist, but every failure will make us stronger!

The most important thing is that we must learn lessons from failure. We will do it every time, because we are doing a series of experiments, after all, every experiment cannot be successful, so behind every failed experiment, we will summarize why the experiment failed and analyze the reasons for failure. For these specific reasons, we will make a specific improvement to it to improve our experimental success rate

Q7: For students who want to participate in similar competitions in the future, what suggestions or experiences can you share?

A: I think this is a competition that requires a lot of effort and time, so I say that students who want to participate in this kind of competition should first arrange their time well. After all, we are all high school students now, and the study pressure is also very high. If you spend a lot of time on just one project, it is very likely that your other projects will be affected, and finally affect your academic results.

Secondly, you must improve yourself, understand your own project, and understand what you have done very well, so that you can deal well with the questions that experts may raise about your project in the end. Secondly, the project you are doing must have real practical value, and you can't do something very empty

Q8: Has this competition experience affected your interest in scientific research or a specific field? If so, how do you plan to further explore this field?

A: Our research project is basically in the field of chemistry and materials science. I am interested in chemistry myself, so I have also done a series of activities and preparations related to chemistry before.

During the summer vacation, I also participated in some chemistry- related scientific research projects. For example, this year, I took a course on computational organic chemistry. During the summer vacation, I plan to start with studying organic chemistry to continue to improve my understanding of chemistry. After all, the AP courses I took in school before were all about inorganic chemistry.
