LanYu Jiang
Interviewer: Good day, Professor Jiang! Could you please tell us when you participated in the Dunhuang study program? How did you feel at that time?
Professor Jiang: I took part in the Dunhuang Mogao Caves study tour organized by our school in mid-October. I was incredibly excited to learn that I was chosen to accompany the team, as the Mogao Caves have always been a place I longed to visit.
Interviewer:What about the Mogao Caves appeals to you?
rofessor Jiang: Ancient Dunhuang was a vital stop on the Silk Road, bringing together various cultures and technologies. Over time, these interactions and adaptations formed a comprehensive knowledge system encompassing art, music, mathematics, astronomy, and more, making it a true cultural treasure trove.
Interviewer: What insights did you and your students gain from this study trip?
Professor Jiang: It was truly an eye - opening experience. After returning, the students, driven by their interests and majors, proposed several research topics. As an art teacher, I was particularly inspired by the exquisite murals and sculptures in the Mogao Caves. I wanted to incorporate these experiences into my teaching, so this semester, I initiated a project in the Art Department called "From Shape to Spirit: Innovating Tradition." We aim to study traditional Chinese art, absorbing its essence to fuel future artistic innovation. Let's hear from our student representative, ChenShihan, about their experiences in this program.
Interviewer: Hello, please introduce yourself!
Chen: Hi everyone, I am Chen Shihan from the Art Department.
Interviewer: Professor Jiang mentioned a traditional art study program this semester. Could you tell us about it?
Chen: Yes, Professor Jiang initiated the "From Shape to Spirit: Innovating Tradition" project. We went to the Luozhong Temple in Luzhi for a study trip, where we observed and learned about the nine Arhat statues from the Northern Song dynasty, Tang dynasty stone pillars, and ancient architecture. After returning, we grouped according to our interests to research, replicate, and deeply study the characteristics and crafting techniques of these statues.
Interviewer: That must have been very rewarding. Could you share some of your insights?
Chen: Certainly! We learned a lot, like the vivid characteristics of the statues and their diverse sculpting techniques. This has greatly in spired our artistic creation. Envisioning future studies abroad, this knowledgeh as enriched our understanding and boosted our confidence. We're also grateful to our school for providing various opportunities to learn about diverse cultures. We hope to continue these explorations next spring, perhaps in Dunhuang or other culturally rich and historically significant locations.
